Position Summary

The department of Physics and Engineering at Slippery Rock University (SRU) invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor position in physics to begin in Fall 2018, with preference given to applicants with a background in experimental physics.

The department faculty are committed to delivering student-centered evidence-based pedagogy. Candidates are expected to have familiarity or experience implementing active-learning techniques in the classroom and be able to establish a high-quality research program in experimental physics that can involve undergraduates.

Responsibilities: Teach a combination of undergraduate physics courses ranging from an inquiry-based conceptual physics course to upper division major courses; Establish a productive and sustainable research program that involves undergraduates; Actively participate in student advising and departmental/university service.

The physics & engineering department at SRU offers B.S. and B.A. programs in Physics with several concentrations as well as two new B.S. degree programs in engineering. The quality and the number of majors in the department have steadily grown over the past 10 years. We currently graduate 10-15 students per year. This growth is due to the implementation of a long-term, on-going strategic plan that we initiated several years ago; expanding and revitalizing the physics program and the development of new engineering programs.

As a public comprehensive university and one of fourteen institutions in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, SRU is a vibrant, student-centered community of learners and scholars. The university places a high value on the quality of the teaching and learning experience with over 150 undergraduate programs and tracks, 25 master’s degree programs, and a doctoral program in physical therapy. The University is selective in admissions and enrolls approximately 8000 undergraduate and 1200 graduate students.

Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. in Physics required prior to the start of Fall 2018. A successful performance in an on-campus interview, including a teaching demonstration and a research presentation is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Teaching: Candidates with (i) teaching experience as the instructor of record in introductory physics lecture courses; and (ii) experience implementing Physics Education Research (PER) pedagogies in the classroom; will be given preference.

Research Specialization: Experimental Physicists with expertise in condensed matter physics, soft matter physics, optics or closely related areas will be given preference.
