Position Summary Information

Position Summary

The Digital Design Director is a key member of the Slippery Rock University communication and public affairs team with primary responsibility for leading the digital design, videography and photography efforts of the department in order to increase the University’s visibility, brand-awareness, reputation and engagement with key internal and external constituencies, stakeholders, suppliers and vendors. Working in close collaboration with colleagues and campus partners, the director embraces an approach that ensures SRU is engaging its key constituents through high quality, creative visual communications as well as producing content for publications, websites and various other communication channels.

Essential position duties and responsibilities:
• Serve as a key member of the leadership team;
• Assist in providing direction for University social media channels, e-communications, digital and print collateral projects;
• Direct, oversee and participate in content creation, design and continuing development of the University’s news department, ensuring adoption and integration of appropriate new technologies to maximize information delivery and client engagement. Assist in leading the institution’s branding and public relations efforts in support of the University’s vision;
• Assist in developing and implementing strategic initiatives that differentiate the University in the higher education marketplace utilizing all available communication channels including collateral development, web and social media;
• Works directly with the executive director and associate executive director to develop visual pieces that articulate the University’s brand;
• Demonstrate knowledge of HTML, CSS, color theory, layout and design principles, typography, photography, videography and video editing;
• Expert level knowledge and understanding of a variety of software applications including: The Adobe Creative Suite/Adobe CC (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Acrobat etc.), Microsoft Office, Adobe Premier and/or Final Cut Pro;
• Possess a critical eye for detail, the creativity of a designer and/or art director, and the mindset required to further hone technical skills in the continuously changing world of digital media and Web;
• Capability of utilizing both Mac/Windows platforms and operating peripheral equipment including printers, scanners, digital cameras, digital video cameras, and digital projectors;
• Experience working in a production style workflow (Web, Print, or both) while also understanding file formats (.jpg, .tiff, .png, .mp4, .avi etc. etc.) and their intended areas of use;
• Familiarity in working within a content management system. Experience with Ingeniux is a plus.
• Ability to creatively translate abstract concepts into effective visual form in a variety of media; adapt graphics to fit the needs of clients and target audiences; utilize production tools to design, edit and produce video and graphic materials; communicate effectively in both oral and written form; compose and edit materials; explain technical concepts in a non-technical manner; assist staff with corresponding technical requirements, research and learn new software and techniques in technology and prioritize, organize and schedule work assignments/projects; and work individually and/or in a group in a deadline driven environment;
• Maintain branding across all platforms;
• Manage and maintain digital asset library;
• Demonstrate a passion for staying abreast of the newest digital trends.
• Motion, animation and 3D experience a plus.
• Ability to quickly produce digital assets, including videos as needed, for website and emails;
• Ability to design digital elements such as billboards and content graphics; Must be comfortable working with responsive layouts and designs;
• Ability to engage and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders at all organizational levels;

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
• A bachelor’s degree in visual communication, journalism, design, integrative media, communication or a related field with three or more years of experience is required. In lieu of a bachelor’s degree, an associate’s or technical degree in visual communication, journalism, design, integrative media, communication or a related field, plus five or more years’ of experience, may be considered.

Experience:
• Demonstrated 3-5 years of digital design experience. All candidates will be evaluated in part based on experience and quality of online portfolio.

Skills and characteristics required:
• Strong photography and videography skills;
• Advanced skill with video editing software;
• Ability to deliver high-impact designs within template constraints;
• Demonstrated proficiency in industry-standard technology and processes including knowledge of standard hardware, software, Internet practices and common communications;
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills;
• Excellent time management skills;
• Proven organizational and planning skills;
• Demonstrated attention to details and accuracy;
• Experience working with diverse groups of people;
• Ability to work independently.

Successful performance in an on-campus interview.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of Web publishing/authoring software strongly preferred.
Higher education experience preferred.
Leadership and staff supervisory experience preferred.
